Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality nursing care to individuals with acute or enduring mental health conditions within an inpatient setting, ensuring their physical, emotional, and psychological needs are met.
Carry out comprehensive assessments of patients’ mental health, physical health, and social needs, and contribute to the formulation of personalised care plans.
Administer medication safely and effectively in line with legal frameworks, including controlled drugs, and monitor patients for any side effects or changes in mental or physical health.
Undertake regular risk assessments for all patients, identifying and managing potential risks, including self-harm, aggression, or deterioration in mental state.
Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT), including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists, to ensure that care is holistic and meets patients’ needs.
Support patients in developing coping mechanisms and strategies for managing their mental health conditions, fostering recovery and preparation for discharge.
Manage the admission and discharge process, ensuring all necessary documentation, assessments, and care plans are completed accurately and timely.
Monitor and document patient progress through detailed and accurate record-keeping, ensuring that care plans are regularly reviewed and updated in collaboration with the wider team.
Work within the legal frameworks of the Mental Health Act 1983, ensuring that patients’ rights are protected, and appropriate care is provided to those under section.
Adhere to safeguarding policies for vulnerable adults, ensuring that any concerns are raised in accordance with legal and organisational procedures.
Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment on the ward, ensuring that standards of cleanliness, safety, and infection control are upheld.
Offer emotional support to families and carers, involving them where appropriate in the care planning and treatment process.
Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies or deteriorating patients, escalating concerns to senior staff when necessary.
Contribute to shift handovers and ensure clear communication between team members to promote continuity of care.
